An elastic plastic bottle stopper is in two parts arranged axially with a thin layer of material impervious to gases lying transversely between them. This layer is pref. a film of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer coated on both sides with polyethylene. The example, shown has the top (2) and bottom (3) parts sepd. by a thin impervious film (4) of the pref. polymer with polyethylene coating, and of total thickness 0.1mm. It is located in the top quarter of the stopper ie., where the stopper exerts the max. pressure against the neck of the bottle concerned. The stopper is basically cylindrical but with a slight attenuation at the inner end (70) and at the base (5) of the topmost shoulder (80). The stopper thus fits into the bottle neck to withstand an internal pressure of e.g, 1-2 bar. It is suitable for sparkling wines as a result. ADVANTAGE - The stopper has the deg. of imperviousness to gases which is required (e.g, for wine bottles etc.). It is made of inexpensive elastic material. Its polyethylene coating minimises its water absorption.
