The invention concerns a method of manufacturing powder-form anionic-surfactant preparations by spray-drying aqueous suspensions of the components. The aim of the invention is to be able to replace the usually used alkylbenzene sulphonate by an alkyl sulphate, without the spray-dried material spontaneously igniting, but nevertheless give powders which are pourable and free-running and do not form lumps. This is achieved by mixing 90 to 180 parts by wt. of an alkyl sulphate of the formula: R<1>-OSO3X, in which R<1> is an alkyl group with 10 to 20 C-atoms and X is an alkali-metal ion, an ammonium ion or an alkyl-substituted or hydroxyalkyl-substituted ammonium ion, and 120 to 300 parts by wt. of a substantially inorganic phosphate-free carrier material containing an alkali-metal aluminosilicate and an alkali-metal silicate in the ratio from 100:1 to 20:1 or from 5:1 to 1:2, with sufficient water to form a free-flowing, pumpable mixture. Enough water is then removed from this mixture by spray-drying, using drying gases, at temperatures below 250 DEG C, that a free-flowing powder is produced.
