<p>A chiral smectic liquid crystal device is constituted by forming a rectangular cell structure including a pair of substrates and an injection port in a side of the cell structure, the pair of substrates having been provided with alignment axes in substantially identical directions, and filling the cell structure with a chiral smectic liquid crystal through the injection port. The alignment axes are provided, e.g., by rubbing so as to provide a pretilt of liquid crystal molecules in the vicinity of the liquid crystal molecules to raise their heads in a direction which is on an axis parallel to the side of the substrates with the injection port or directed toward the injection port, whereby liquid crystal layer thickness irregularity due to movement of liquid crystal molecules along the cell extension is suppressed. <IMAGE></p> |
