In order to be able to equip the vehicle with a single inflatable cushion (air bag) arranged, when it is not inflated, in a housing (13) made over the entire width of the dashboard of the vehicle and protecting both the driver of the vehicle and a passenger seated beside him in the event of an accident, the control system for steering this vehicle comprises a lever (11) which can be moved in a plane and replaces the steering wheel of conventional vehicles.
