PURPOSE:To provide a target retaining device for producing an optical fiber preform useful for mass production of optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:A supporting member for producing an optical fiber preform is a target retaining member useful in a process of forming a porous glass preform by bonding and depositing glass fine particles on a target in a reactor and/or a process of heating the porous glass preform to create a transparent optical fiber preform wherein the target retaining member is composed of a ceramics having <=0.5wt.% volatile metallic impurity content a >=1600 deg.C softening temperature or decomposition temperature.
