PURPOSE:To provide the subject novel substance having an activity to inhibit the polygalacturonase of a plant pathogenic fungi and useful as a pest control agent, putrefaction-preventing agent, etc., by culturing a specific microorganism having an ability to produce crogarin in a medium and subsequently collecting the product from the cultured product. CONSTITUTION:A microorganism F-0248 stain (FERM 12278) which is a strain of fungi belonging to the order Pezizales is cultured in a medium to accumulate the objective product in the cultured products, and the objective product is collected to provide a novel physiologically active substance; crogarin, characterized by mol.wt.: 1-2X10<6>; thermal stability: stable in a neutral-weak alkaline consition; protein content: 61%; saccharide content: 8,9%; amino acid composition (mol%): Asp; 11.1, Thr; 6.0, Ser; 6.2, Gln; 15.0, Pro; 10.6, Gly; 13.0, Ala; 7.6, Val; 4.9, Met; 1.2, Ile; 3.8, Leu; 5.1, Tyr; 1.8, Phe; 3.2, Trp; 0.9, Lys; 3.7, His; 2.0, Arg; 3.6. |
