PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound having high optical purity and useful as a vitamin in high yield by using a microbial strain capable synthesizing exclusively D-pantothenic acid from DL-pantoic acid and beta-alanine and contacting the strain with DL-pantothenic acid, etc., and beta-alanine. CONSTITUTION:A microbial strain capable of synthesizing D-pantothenic acid from DL-pantoic acid and beta-alanine without producing L-pantothenic acid (e.g. Aquaspirillum metamorphum IFO 13960) is cultured under shaking in a medium containing DL-pantoic acid, DL-pantolactone or their mixture and beta-alanine at 30 deg.C for 72hr. The cultured liquid is filtered to remove the microbial cells, the filtrate is passed through a cation exchange column and the liquid is passed through an anion exchange resin to effect the adsorption of D-pantothenic acid. The column is washed with water, the adsorbed component is eluted with 0.2N acetic acid and the eluted liquid is added with calcium hydroxide and concentrated. Ethanol, etc., are added to the concentrated liquid and the precipitated crystal is separated by filtration and dried to obtain the objective D-pantothenic acid. |
