PURPOSE:To produce an N-substituted maleimide in high yield in a shortened reaction time with suppressing side reactions such as polymerization by one- stage reaction. CONSTITUTION:At least 1.05mol, based on 1mol aromatic or aliphatic primary amine, of maleic anhydride is subjected to ring formation reaction through dehydration in the presence of an acid catalyst in an organic solvent, then the reaction solution is washed with 0.5-5 times as much water as the excessive amount of maleic anhydride by weight, separated into an organic layer containing maleimides and a water layer and then the water layer is recycled and fed in an aqueous solution as it is to the reaction process. |
