PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as a treating agent for cardiovascular diseases, etc., on an industrial scale at a low cost by culturing an L-carnitine-producing mold in a medium containing a depolymerized organonitrogen compound component, beans, oil and fat component, etc., and separating the objective compound from the cultured product. CONSTITUTION:A mold capable of producing L-carnitine (e.g. Rhizopus oligosporus Saito IFO 8631) is cultured at 28 deg.C for 6 days in a medium added with one or more kinds of the components such as (A) a depolymerized organonitrogen compound component (e.g. urea), (B) beans or component of processed beans (e.g. defatted soybean) and (C) an oil and fat component (e.g. soybean oil). The solid cultured product is separated, crushed in water and centrifuged to obtain a liquid extract. The extract is subjected to ultra-filtration, decolored with an anion exchange resin and passed through a cation exchange resin column. The adsorbed component is eluted with ammonia water, dialyzed and recrystallized with an organic solvent to obtain the objective L-carnitine. |
