Concrete reinforced with steel rods or strands which are provided with a closed coating which is resistant to chemicals and is made of plastic such as epoxy resin, unsaturated polyester resin or vinyl ester resin. According to a preferred embodiment, the plastic coating includes 30 vol % of hollow spheres made of a thermoplastic. Equally, the rods may include cavities which are formed during fabrication, for example with the aid of a blowing agent. Consequently, the rods exhibit greater compressibility, making the concrete more resistant to higher temperature differences.
