A method of producing a catalyst for the alkylation of phenol with methanol to ortho-cresol, consisting of iron oxide modified with a small addition of other metals, involving the precipitation of components of aqueous solution with excess ammonia, filtering of the precipitate, forming and drying, characterized in that magnetite together with modifying agents is precipitated from equimolar solutions of iron(II) and iron(III) sulphates containing added chromium, silicon, potassium and vanadium in the form of salts.
