摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain a large-sized high definition liquid crystal display device in which a screen is bright and looks to advantage even it is used by a reflection type, and its brightness is not varied by a temperature by making light transmissivity in an antiferroelectric phase higher than light transmissivity in a ferroelectric phase. CONSTITUTION:In a liquid electro-optical element formed by combining a liquid crystal element in which two pieces of substrates provided with an electrode are superposed so that the electrodes are opposed to each other, and an antiferroelectric liquid crystal is inserted and held between two pieces of substrates, and at least one piece of polarizing plate, an angle made by a light absorbing axis P1 of the polarizing plate of an antiferroelectric phase to which a voltage is not applied and an optical axis OA, and said element becomes a turn-on state. On the other hand, when a voltage is applied, the optical axis becomes OF (+) which makes an angle of 45 deg.-theta against P1, therefore, it becomes a turn-off state that the light transmissivity is low. Also, in this case, it is desirable that in two pieces of substrates, a uniaxial orientation processing for orienting a liquid crystal is performed to at least one of them, and also, in two pieces of substrates, at least one of them is transparent by including the electrode on the substrate.
