Improved process for the treatment of water, consisting in introducing bentonite and a polyelectrolyte in an aqueous medium to be treated. The process is characterized in that the bentonite also contains from 0.01 to 20 % of a deflocculating agent by dry weight of the weight of said bentonite and in that said suspension of bentonite and deflocculating agent is introduced into the medium to be treated in an amount of 0.01 to 3 % by weight of bentonite, expressed in dry weight in relation to the weight of substances in suspension in the medium to be treated. Application in improving paper retention properties.
