Device for reeling in and paying out link means, of the type including a rotating drum (30) on the outer surface of which can be wound and paid out a portion of the link means (C). The device comprises another section of link means, of an essentially constant length, a first end of which is connected without any break to the initial section of link means through a passage formed in said drum, and a second end of which is fixedly mounted. The second section of link means extends according to a plurality (N) of free turns, and winding of said initial section of link means about the drum and paying out of said initial section from the drum is accompanied by a variation in the number and diameter of said free turns. The invention provides means (18, 38, 40) for maintaining two extreme turns of the second section of link means essentially in two limiting planes transversal to the drum.
