The motor (9) is coupled by gearing (10) and an adjuster (11) to the tailgate (2) whose wt. is counterbalanced by a spring (5) offering support in the direction of movement of the drive. The tailgate is coupled to the vehicle body (4) via hinged arm (3). The adjuster incorporates a cab-like push-pull element (12) with a straight guide (13) at the end nearer to the gate and a U-shape at the other. The guide incorporates a cylinder (19) and piston (20) to engage the gate within the region of interaction with the spring. ADVANTAGE - Location of motor and gearing is freely selectable, compact transmission connection without restriction of support by counterbalancing spring.
