Known methods and devices for lap-welding of copying ribbons containing thermoplastics, by means of ultrasound, have been further developed and ensure troublefree use even in needle printers with thin needles and allow the welding of multicoloured ribbons. By the method according to the invention, the ribbon to be joined is fixed on a displaceable base (4, 4') by a vacuum and cut by an ultrasonic sonotrode (1) on an anvil (10, 10') and welded by the textured part (2) of the sonotrode (1) on a likewise textured anvil (12). The device is distinguished by the use of standardised, commercially available components, is correspondingly fault-free, can be produced cost-effectively and ensures high production rates.
