A bale opener for detaching fibre flocks from top faces of fibre bales (2) includes a tower (6) for travelling along a row of fibre bales, a housing (7) supported on, and projecting laterally from the tower (6), an opening roll (9) supported for rotation in the housing (7) and being oriented horizontally and transversely to the direction of travel of the tower (6) and a displacing mechanism (15, 16, 17) for displacing the housing (7) and the opening roll (9) as a unit horizontally relative to the tower (6), in a direction transverse to the direction of travel.
