The multipart piston has a head section with hubs, to accommodate the gudgeon pin. An outer ring wall has a first end merging into the base of the head section, and is open at the second end. The wall has a piston ring groove. A hollow chamber encloses hubs/their supporting ring ribs. The chamber wall (8) is clamped between two collars (10,11), which project from the end face (9) of the ring wall (3). The radially outer collar is flanged about the outer edge (12) of the chamber wall, through less than 90 deg. The wall is formed by a sheet metal ring, and is radially divided at least once. USE/ADVANTAGE - No cracks in collar on multipart piston for IC engine.
