The stepped measurement plug has a section (10) with a set of sensors (11) along its surface. Calibration is performed using a ring (21) with internal dia. equal to the characteristic dia. of the measurement bore in a workpiece. Above the first section the plug has a second section of larger diameter which carries a second group of sensors (12) on rigidly attached bars (5) and offset w.r.t. the first group of sensors. These are calibrated using a second ring (22) of internal diameter equal to the second section's diameter. The first ring (21) has slots (25-28) for the bars to pass through. ADVANTAGE - More than one characteristic dia. can be measured without refitting when fixed sensor arrangements are used.
