The invention concerns a method of preparing cyclopentanones containing up to four alkyl groups, each with 1 to 3 C-atoms, a C-atom in the beta -position with respect to the carbonyl group having at least one hydrogen atom. Such compounds can be prepared in a single step by an intramolecular rearrangement reaction in which appropriate bis-allyl ethers, allyl, vinyl ethers or 4-pentenals are heated at elevated temperatures in an inert solvent in the presence of carbon monoxide and a ruthenium catalyst.
