A process for preparing 1,2-naphthoquinonediazido-5-sulfonyl chloride which comprises reacting 1,2-naphthoquinonediazido-5-sulfonic acid or a salt thereof with phosgene in the presence of pyridine. According to this process, it is possible to prepare 1,2-naphthoquinonediazido-5-sulfonyl chloride in a high yield with ease from 1,2-naphthoquinonediazido-5-sulfonic acid or a salt thereof.
