<p>An electrochemical cell comprises a light-metal anode, a porous metallic or graphite cathode, and a liquid electrolyte in the form of a non-aqueous inorganic solvent, preferably thionyl chloride. The electrolyte is stored in a sealed container and is only destroyed when the cell is first used, in order to wet the cathode. The resultant increase in the rated voltage is an index of the activation time. In order to reduce the activation time and to increase the rated voltage, an oxidizing agent, preferably sulphuryl chloride, is added to the basic constituent of the electrolyte.</p> |
