Synthetic lubricant base stocks are obtained by oligomerizing linear olefins having from 10 to 24 carbon atoms in the presence of a catalyst comprising a cation-exchangeable layered clay (e.g. montmorillonite) which has been treated with a non-halogenated titanium or (more preferably) zirconium compound, e.g. titanium sulphate or more preferably, zirconium sulphate. These catalysts produce a good conversion of monomer into oligomer mixtures with a high rate of trimers and higher oligomers to dimers.
