<p>PURPOSE:To provide new liquid crystalline compounds showing a remarkable spontaneous polarization and suitable for a liquid crystalline display device excellent in rapid response. CONSTITUTION:Compounds of formula I (R is 3-20C straight chain alkyl; R* is 4-20C alkyl having optically active part; X is F or H), e.g. 4-hexyloxy-2,3- difluoro-4'-biphenylcarboxylic acid 4-(2-hydroxy-R-1- methylheptyloxycarbonylphenyl)ester of formula II. The compounds of formula I can be obtained, e.g. by the method mentioned below; A compound of formula III is converted into a compound of formula IV by using an alkyl halide and 4-position thereof is substituted with lithium by using an alkyl lithium. A boric acid compound of formula V is obtained by using a boric acid triester and subsequently coupled with 4-iodobenzoic acid benzyl ester and the protective groups are then removed by saponification to obtain a compound of formula VI. Further, the compound of formula VI is reacted with an ester of formula VIII obtained by reaction between a compound of formula VII and an optically active alcohol, thus obtaining the objective compound of formula I.</p> |
