PURPOSE:To obtain the salicyclic acid derivative suitable, e.g. as a color- developing agent for a pressure-sensitive sheet or a thermo-sensitive sheet with industrial advantage by reacting a 3-alkylsalicyclic acid with a benzyl alcohol, a benzyl alkyl ether, etc., in the presence of aluminum chloride catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective salicyclic acid derivative such as a 3-alkyl-5- benzylsalicyclic acid (e.g. 3-methyl-5-benzylsalicyclic acid) represented by formula IV (R1 is 1-12C alkyl or cycloalkyl) are obtained by reacting a 3-alkylsalicyclic acid (e.g. 3-methylsalycyclic acid) expressed by formula I (R1 is 1-12C alkyl or cycloalkyl) with a benzyl alcohol, a benzyl alkyl ether (e.g benzyl methyl ether) represented by formula II (R2 and R3 are H, halogen, 1-12C alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl; R4 is H or 1-4C lower alkyl) or a dibenzyl ether represented by formula III in the presence of aluminum chloride catalyst. |
