The exposed and highly immunogenic A-antigenic loop of influenza hemagglutinin (HA) is homologous with a Principal Neutralizing Determinant (PND) present on the Human Immunodeficiency Virus' (HIV) envelope glycoprotein, gp120. Inoculation of a mammal with a killed or attenuated virus, or purified HA protein, modified so as to convert the HA A-antigenic site into an HIV PND, produces the usual strong response to the HA site A, but the antibody produced is specific to the hemagglutinin-HIV PND chimaera, and is useful to neutralize HIV.
|
