PURPOSE:To exercise the driving stability at the same level with or more than a conventional tire while realizing the light-weight of the tire which has two layers of steel cord belt layers. CONSTITUTION:In a pneumatic radial tire in which plural grooves 6 extending in the tire circular direction are provided on the tread surface, belt layers 4u and 4d which consist of two layers of steel cords are provided in the tread, the steel wire total section area alpha per 50mm width of the belt layers 4u and 4d is made within 5<=alpha<=9mm<2>, the depth d of the grooves 6 is made within 0<=d<=8.0mm, and the rubber thickness t under the groove from the groove bottom to the outermost belt layer 6u is made within 1.0<=t<=2.5mm.
