PURPOSE:To obtain a fuel rod for a reactor using Gd-containing fuel which enables reduction of the cost of manufacture since manufacturing facilities can be simplified and also enables relaxation of nuclear and thermal limitations and, besides, unrestricted selection of the concentration of a burnable reactivity control substance, e.g. Gd2O3, in accordance with desired performance. CONSTITUTION:A fuel rod 10 is constructed in such a manner that a rod material 2 formed of a burnable reactivity control substance such as Gd2O3 is passed in a piercing manner through hollow parts of a plurality of hollow pellets 1 each having a hole along the central axis and constituted of UO2 or MOX, so as to form a pellet stack, and that this pellet stack is sealed in a cladding tube 4. Since the rod material constituted of the Gd2O3 can be manufactured in non-nuclear fuel manufacturing facilities, it is unnecessary to provide two discrete systems of a line handling the Gd2O3 and a line handling only the UO2 or the MOX in nuclear fuel manufacturing facilities, and thus the cost of manufacture of the fuel rod can be reduced. By changing the diameter of the rod material of the Gd2O3 and the concentration of it, besides, the design can be optimized in conformity with the performance of nuclear fuel. In addition, the excellent performance of the usual hollow pellet can be maintained as it is.
