PURPOSE:To enable resistance between a solid electrolyte and an electrode to be reduced and characteristics of an electrochemical element to be improved by performing aging treatment where a specific voltage is applied between electrodes alternately at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:In a sensor element, a heater plate 1, a spacer 2, a pump 3, and a spacer 4 are constituted by laminating an electromotive force cell 5 and a screening body plate 6 and a heater 7 is buried into the plate 1. thus enabling the sensor element to be retained at approximately 800 deg.C by a control circuit. One porous electrode 11 of the cell 3 is exposed to a measurement gas environment and an internal reference oxygen chamber 17 is connected to a diffusion chamber 15 through a leakage resistance portion 18. The cell 5 operates as an oxygen light and shade battery and at the same time carries oxygen ions from the chamber 15 to the chamber 17 according to a specified current between porous electrodes 13 and 14, thus enabling an oxygen division pressure of the chamber 17 to be maintained at a specified value. When a specified current is allowed to flow to the cell 5, the cell which is subjected to aging shows a smooth resistance drop as shown in A1 and A2 along with temperature increase by a heater and a degree of reduction in resistance is also fast. |
