To ensure that a shunt generator 6, 7 builds up a voltage of correct polarity, the shunt field circuit includes the contacts of an electromagnetic switch 20 which, in its de-energized condition prepares the circuit for "flashing" by an appropriately poled D.C. source. This source may be a battery 39 which normally floats on the bus-bars 10, 11 to be fed by the generator, or may be independent. of the generator. The " flashing" circuit is completed upon closure of a manually controlled switch 33, which also completes the energizing circuit of the coil 34 of the electromagnetic switch. This switch then responds, with a delay which may be artificially increased, and establishes a normal shunt connection for the field 7., A protective resistor 31 limits the "flashing" current in event of failure of switch 20 to respond. The field circuit also includes the usual carbon-pile voltage regulator 17. Machine 6, 7 may be an exciter for, an alternator. |
