PURPOSE:To improve the gas sealing quality of a fused carbonate fuel cell, and extend the service life thereof by exposing the edge of a wet seal section for gas flow passage separation to atmosphere containing carbon dioxide equal to or above the predetermined percentage. CONSTITUTION:An electrolytic plate 1 is clamped with an air electrode 2 and a fuel electrode 3, and the peripheral edge of the plate 1 is held with interconnectors 4 and 5, and projected sections 4 and 5b, thereby forming gaps 6 and 7 around the electrodes 2 and 3 for use as gas flow passages. Also, a matrix sheet comprising LiAlO2 powder and an organic binder is formed for use as the plate 1, and the electrode 3 is impregnated beforehand with electrolyte of fused Li2CO3/K2CO3 for the retention thereof. Also, a whole is placed in a sealed vessel containing 5vol.% or more of carbon dioxide and the air as a remnant, and the exposed section of a wet seal section 13 is subjected to atmosphere in the vessel. According to this construction, an electrolyte outflow can be restrained, and the sealing quality of the cell is improved. Also, the loss of the electrolyte can be reduced, and the stable characteristics of the cell can be maintained, even during long time operation. |
