The diagnosis apparatus can be attached to an on-board module (10) for storing and preprocessing signals coming from the computers (18, 20) of various systems of the vehicle. It comprises a microprocessor (28), a user interface with keypad for entering interrogation data and display screen (36), an interface linking the microprocessor with the module, a random-access work memory (30) and a mass memory (32), having a capacity of several tens of Mbytes at least, into which are loaded expert system software for diagnosis, software for communication with the said module consisting of a library of communication functions activatable on request by the diagnosis software and data base management software storing the causes of breakdowns on the basis of symptoms and interrogateable by the diagnosis software. <IMAGE>
