Process for obtaining a thin layer of a polymer chosen from polyaniline, polypyrrole and polythiophene, which are optionally substituted, and their copolymers, the said thin layer being deposited on at least one metal part of the surface of a substrate, characterised in that the operation is carried out chemically by placing the said part of the surface of the substrate for a sufficient time in contact with an aqueous solution containing: - at least one starting compound chosen from optionally substituted aniline, thiophene and pyrrole and their derivatives; - nitric acid in a concentration of 0.01-0.5 M; and in that the said part of the surface of the substrate consists of a metal material based on iron or zinc. Use of the thin polymer layer obtained as primer layer for protecting a metal surface based on iron or zinc, including zinc deposited on steel.
