Mechanical removal of surface layers from compact disc base - using tool that is moved across surface of disc securely held in carrier with depth of cut equal to layer thickness

A compact disc has surface layers of metal, lacquer and colour printing that are to be removed in a process aimed at recovery of the base material, when reject discs are produced. The discs (3) are retained by suction applied (6) to the underside when the discs are located in a carrier (1). With the discs securely held a tool (8) with a sharp cutting edge is moved across the surface. The setting is such that surface layer is removed. A retaining plate (10) moves with the tool to prevent any possibility of lifting.
