<p>Transparent elements capable of withstanding mechanical stress and including at least one glass element (A1) shaped as a rod, a pipe, a tube, a strip or a plate, and/or glass elements (A2) shaped as balls, grains or fragments; transparent fibres (B); and a cured transparent resin (C) in which the fibres (B) and elements (A2) are embedded. The fibres (B) and the resin (C) coating them are bonded to the elements (A1), and the resin (C) is selected so that, when cured, it has a refractive index which differs by no more than 0.001 from that of the fibres (B) and the elements (A1, A2) for a wavelength of 510-520 nm, although the difference in indices between the resin (C) and the strip or plate-like elements (A1) may be of up to 0.01 when said elements have a relatively large size in relation to the whole of the structural element. It is therefore possible to produce elongate columnar elements (see cross-sectional view above) shaped as plane or curved plates, and objects having more complex shapes.</p> |
