In the method proposed, polyol ethers can be produced, without the otherwise unavoidable production of salts, by reacting with hydrogen, at elevated temperature and pressure, in the presence of a catalyst which is insoluble in the reaction mixture, mixtures containing (a) polyols and (b) carbonyl compounds of the formula R<1>-CO-R<2>, in which R<1> and R<2>, independently of each other, are hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbon group with 1 to 22 carbon atoms and 0, 1, 2 or 3 double bonds.
