Data from a measuring sensor or keypad (2) are converted (4) into a suitable form for transmission (6) over a first optical waveguide (8) to an optoelectronic converter and signal processor at the distant station. Power for the sensing station (1) is transmitted from a distant light source via a second optical waveguide (20) for conversion (21) into electrical energy for the data sensing and conditioning circuits (2, 4). A diode driver supplies the light source. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. in hostile or explosive atmos. or strong electromagnetic interference, both power and data transmission lines are immunised and protected against short-circuits.
