The videophone and its operating method is for searching image data recorded on a tape rapidly. The videophone includes a third switch (SW3) connected between a first switch and a CPU, and a comparator (IC2) for comparing output signal of a binary counter (IC1) with a search signal transmitted from a CPU. The method comprises the steps: (A) designating identification signal region on a tape; (B) comparing search signal transmitted from a CPU and identification signal read from the identification signal region in a tape; (C) reading out image data from a tape when two signals in the step (B) are coincide; and (D) repeating the step (B) when two signals in the step (B) do not coincide.
