<p>Apparatus (10) for classifying tobacco includes a plurality of vertical lift, single-pass, closed loop apparatus (11, 12, 13, 14) projecting a stream of mixed tobacco components across a classifying chamber (17) of each module, and a portion thereof directly into the infeed apparatus (60, 61, 62, 63) of the next downstream module (12, 13 or 14). A common porous conveyor (58) extending through the modules of the closed loop air stream removes tobacco heavies. A second lower reversible conveyor (113) removes overflow and dust or other particles falling out of suspension and deposits same in the heavier discharge (118) or in another collection point. The modules as well as the infeed apparatus (60, 61, 62, 63) are interchangeable.</p> |
