The plate cylinder (1) of a rotary printing machine has a groove (2) in its periphery which runs parallel to the cylinder axis. The groove receives the carrier (3) for the printing plate clamping device. One end (8) of the printing palte (32) is folded over a rib (6) attached to a tube (22) which fits in a matching groove (24) in the side wall of a channel (5) formed in the carrier (3). The other end (33) of the printing plate (32) is folded over a ridge (21) which projects from a support block (4) mounted in the channel (5). The support block (4) has a forked lower end which fits over an eccentric cam (34) mounted on a shaft (12). Rotating the shaft causes the support block to move sideways and apply a clamping force to the printing plate.
