Polyarylene ethers (I) contain (A) 1-100 (10-100) mol.% repeated 4,5-bis(aryl)oxazole or 4,5-bis(aryl)-2-imidazolidone structural elements of formula (1a) and/or (1b), and (B) 99-0 (90-0) mol.% repeating structural elements of formula -(Ars-O-AR1-O-)- (2). R1 = H, 1-4C alkyl, or Ph; Ar1 = gp. of one of formulae (3a)-(3e) where X = -SO-, -SO2-, or -CO-; a = 0 or 1; and b = 2 or 3. Ar2 = gp. of one of formulae (4a)-(4i). Z = -CH2-, -C(Me)2-, -C(Me)(Ph)-, -C(CF3)2-, -S, -O-, -SO-, -SO2-, or -CO-; Q = direct bond, -CH2-, -O- or -CO-; and R2-R5 = H or 1-4C alkyl. R1, when = Ph, and aromatic rings in formulae (1a), (1b), (3a)-(3-e), and (4a)-(4i) are opt. substd. by 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy, 6-14C aryloxy, or nitrile or halogen.
