Prepn. of porous sintered parts from metal or ceramic powders uses organic binders or plasticisers contg. a (mixed) polymer of a vinyl aromatic cpd. which does not blend with the other components. The mixt. is shaped into parts at raised temp., and the binder or plasticiser, and the additive, are removed at high temp. The part is then sintered. Pref. the part is made of metal (alloy). USE/ADVANTAGE - For making flame protectors for welding, for filters, catalyst carriers, in gas nozzles for metal working, etc. The products can have complicated shapes, are stable, with variable, even porosity from few different powder types, and are economically produced.
