<p>An adaptive optical component of the transmissive or reflective type is disclosed wherein, for obtaining the required phase modulation to provide the wave front adaptive function for the optical radiation propagated through the optical component, or reflected therefrom, a thin conductive film (1) deposited on the component is excited electrically. The heat generated by the film (1) due to Joule effect on being flown a current therethrough induces a deformation in the optical substrate (4) and a change in the refractive index of the air sweeping past the optical surface. These two effects will generate the aforementioned phase modulation. A method is disclosed of manufacturing an optical component of the above-outlined kind, and various methods are indicated for obtaining the best approximation possible and a predetermined phase modulation. The optical component of the invention has a particular application in optical systems which require real time correction of aberrations.</p> |
