<p>A switch comprising two monomode output guides (G2, G3) connected via a Y coupler (5) to a common guide (G1) on an electro-optical substrate (2). Electrodes (6, 8, 10) are supplied by a source (12) to control the difference between the actual indices of said two output guides and thereby direct the light from the common guide to either one of the output guides. One output guide (G2) is wider than the other (G3) so that it alone receives the light when no electrical field is applied. The switch is particularly useful in fibre-optic communication systems.</p> |
