The outer casing of a painting roller is produced by superficially heat-softening a plastic tube and applying an outer covering which becomes firmly attached when the inner tube is cooled and hard again. The inner tube is perforated and can be fused superficially at an appropriate temp., after which a covering with a porous substrate is applied. An inner tube (10) of e.g. polypropylene or polyethylene with perforations (12); it can be made e.g. by spinning-extrusion and its holes made e.g. by means of a needled roller. The tube is pass by a heater (14) to produce the surface melting. The covering (18) is then spirally applied (20) as a strip whilst the hot tube (10)is also moved (22). At the same time the tube (10) is rotated (26). The covering (18) has the porous substrate (28) with upstanding fibres (30). The substrate (28) is a coarse mesh material so that paint can flow through the perforations (12) and the fibres (30) to their tips (32) for coating purposes. ADVANTAGE - Method producing the casing for an internally fed roller is simple, time-saving, and has negligible wastage.
