LEAD ACCUMULATOR WITH DEVICE FOR THE CATALYTIC RECOMBINATION OF GASES FORMED BY ELECTROLYSIS

In a lead accumulator, the recombination device normally mounted in an exposed position, for example on the lid or in the closure stopper, has been moved into the interior of the housing above the set of plates. It comprises a sequence of layers of hydrophobised mineral-fibre or active-carbon mats (2, 3) which are embedded in a metal sleeve (1) which is open at both sides and is preferably composed of lead, a central layer (2) being impregnated with catalyst material. The solid mechanical connection of the metal sleeve to a terminal bridge 5 effectively removes the heat of recombination from the catalyst layer and, in addition, prevents an electrostatic discharge which could result in an ignition of the gases formed by electrolysis.
