In starting apparatus for a 4-cycle gasoline engine the required capacity of a starter motor (16) is reduced by arranging that the engine can be started in a low revolution region of less than 350 rpm, and the starter motor (16) is mounted around a starting clutch mechanism (24,25,33 to 39) connected to a crankshaft (22). The starter motor (16) is conveniently mounted to a recoil starter (14) and connected to a rotary portion of the recoil starter in interlocking relation.
