Display device comprising a matrix of separate elements which can be moved between a first position having a bright appearance and a second position having a dark appearance. The elements each consist of a first series of light-coloured lamellae (laminae) in a louvre-type arrangement and of a second series of dark lamellae arranged parallel thereto in a louvre-type arrangement, which can be moved relative to one another in such a way that the lamellae of the two series cover each other to a greater or lesser extent. A light source may be positioned behind the elements.
