Method for purifying gases by reacting the contamination with a liquid which contains a substance which is able to react with the contamination, the gas and the liquid being fed to a gas diffusion cell 1, which comprises two chambers 3, 4 which are separated from one another by a gas diffusion electrode or membrane 2 which has a hydrophobic side and a hydrophilic side. The gas is fed to the chamber 3, which is covered by the hydrophobic side of the membrane, and the liquid is fed to the chamber 4, which is covered by the hydrophilic side of the membrane. The invention also relates to a device for carrying out this method or a measurement or detection appliance, namely a modified gas diffusion cell which may be provided with a counter-electrode 10. <IMAGE>
