Data are initially transmitted in one direction without block coding. The data are subjected to block coding at the reception end before transmission of the coding information back to the transmission end. The coding information may itself be block coded, with partic. detection at the transmission end to allow fault information to be transmitted to the reception station. Pref. the forwards transmission channel (11) is used for the data transmission and the backwards transmission channel is used for fault identification information (R, FEC). ADVANTAGE - Increased transmission protection using forward error correction.
